Hey ant friends!

I work for a small, Illinois-based nonprofit that specializes in restoring post-agricultural and post-industrial land back into native ecosystems. We're called The Wetlands Initiative.

Our "crown jewel" project is the Dixon Waterfowl Refuge, a former farm along the Illinois River we've restored over 17 years into an amazing, biodiverse, open-to-the-public nature preserve. This August we held a BioBlitz and so far we've recorded over 884 species!

However, we've got no ant experts on staff and a lot of ants left to identify! We used iNaturalist to collect participant observations, which requires two agreeing species-level identifications from two separate users to be considered "research grade". Can you help us identify some of these ants?

If this isn't the right place for this, please let me know, and thank you for your expertise!

Hi, I'm in the wrong country and not experienced enough to help you but I just wanted to say I admire what you are doing and the fact that you are looking for an 'ant expert' speaks volumes, if we all did our little bit the world would be a better place.

One of the ants IDed as Formica subsericea is Camponotus pennsylvanicus. The rest probably can't be IDed to the species without better pictures from multiple angles.

Hi, welcome to the forum!  It would be great if you followed the tutorial on how to embed your images into your posts as well as followed proper formatting for ant ID requests.  Please use these hyperlinks for future references as it makes it easier for members to get the information they need to help you.

This one is some species of Camponotus, likely C. subbarbatus.

I'm no expert, but I'll take a look at them and see if I can identify some of these. I'm pretty familiar with iNaturalist. I go by ferox_feromicae on iNaturalist.
