Newbie question (Formicarium)

I purchased the Formicarium below.

It came with some vinyl tubing, but one end is sealed shut.  I would assume you would want both ends open so that the ants can travel between the two sections.  Is their a particular reason on end would be sealed shut?  I was going to cut the end off, but I didn't want to do that and screw something up.  I don't have any species at the moment, but I bought the formicarium for next year when the local species start coming out again.

You probably added the Nest Mate to your order without realizing it.  It should have a silicone plug on one end and a mesh side on the other.  This is to add extra humidity and a place for ants to drink from within the nest.
