I bought my first two queen ants this winter! I accidentally killed one queen by giving her and her one worker a giant formicarium and too much water.  Noob mistake, I know. The second queen is doing much better since I have managed to leaver her alone... more or less. I love watching them. I am really looking forward to catching some queens this summer. I've been entertaining myself by sculpting tiny founding chambers for my future horde.

The Wakka War refers to a thread in the sandbox. It started with Loops117, now called Emperor Loops by members of the Wakka Alliance. It was a thread full of randomness and fun. You can check it out here: http://www.formicult...59-wakka-wakka/

 

It caught on, and is now the largest thread on the forum, at 22 pages. After the first few pages, T.C. turned against it, and threatened to end the thread. We ignored him and continued to goof around. That is what the thread was for, after all. Over time, T.C. built up a small, yet powerful group of anti-Wakka members, including Martialis, who had once been for the Wakkas. The pro-Wakka side had the advantage of numbers, but the anti-Wakka side had the advantage of 2 forum mods. The thread quickly became a battle ground between the Wakkas, led by Emperor Loops and General Connectimyrmex and the anti-Wakkas, led by T.C.

 

Then, just a few days ago, the threats of the anti-Wakka came true, and a forum moderator named Dermy locked the thread. This caused mass uproar in the sandbox, and there are now several backup Wakka threads, and threads that have become war grounds. A day or two after Wakka Wakka was locked, Martialis returned to the pro-Wakka side.

 

And that's about it. We are still fighting back, attempting to get Wakka Wakka unlocked.

sgheaton:  I live in lakewood and yes I bought my first 2 queens. I am really hoping to catch some Tetramorium and Pheidole this summer!  I know it's too early for most queens to be out but I'm chomping at the bit over here!

Hello fellow coloradan, good luck on your anting ventures this season. I'm hoping for some Pheidole aswell as some Pogonomyrmex's. I also bought my first colony (Lasius Neoniger) this winter and can't wait to get them out of hibernation.    I got 9 workers and hope to get to the hundreds in the summer

Piratechef: antweb indicates there are Pheidole ceres in Golden and in Morrison. have you made your own formicarium yet? I like this aspect of ant keeping as much as the ants themselves. A favorite food of my Lasius is Propolis Honey.

smares: I'm in the process of making a bunch of starter formicaria for the next season. I got a few 3d printed nests on order but besides that I'm going to use the standard tubes and tubs method for my queens. I have about 15 tubs and 50 test tubes. I just need some grout to complete the starter nests. I'm Planning on trips to the mountains and also down south to the dunes this season to complete my variety of species. I have seen some tets and some Pogonomyrmex in my neighborhood so I'm planning on a bunch of them as I have heard that Pogonomyrmex's are hard to get started. I also want to get some camponotus also from my mountain trips and some honey pots from the dunes trip. Possibly some twig ants if i can't spot them, I plan on getting a black light set up during these trips. As you can see I'm getting anxious already I got my Neonigers for xmas so they have been pretty inactive since i got them. I just noticed a few workers finally out of the tube the other day but they havent finished the honey i have left for them or their mealworm that was there when i got them. I'm going to petco or smart to get some more food for them when they start to come out of hibernation. I was thinking about some untreated insects dried like for reptiles just until i need to get my live food farms started (Wingless FF, Etc). I wanna get a few people together to go anting this year but that is just a dream at moment.

Are you paying for your prints? The Arapahoe libraries have makerspace with free 3d printing.  I have printed stuff at the Castlwood location and its great. They limit you to 30 hours a month but you can't beat free.  I only have 10 vials for queens....guess it's time for me to put my game face on!  I'd be interested in group anting, lets see if we can make it happen

Yea I'm supporting one of our fellow formiculture members, I will be posting pics and doing a review when i get my colony into them. I would love to go 3d print somethings but i really haven't the time, i will probably end up going the grout nest rout in addition to the printed nests. I also just acquired a 70 gallon reptile tank i was planning on doing a terrarium this summer also. We definitely need to get the Colorado group Anting thing happening this season though

 Colorado is a beautiful State. Yeah, "over caring" is one of the most common mistakes with first time antkeepers. But we all learn. Welcome to the forum

Colorado anters have really blown up this year, nice to see people getting into it and will give a larger search area for us here

 

There are several people both on the Western slope and the Eastern Slope, so we have a good mix!

Hello all! New to myrmecology, but definitely looking at getting stuck in! I live in the Aurora area by Southlands Mall, and have plenty of opportunities at the nearby reservoirs to gather queens, but as this is my first season I'm gonna hold off til I have everything ready and hopefully come next spring/summer I can start to catch!
