Location: Northeastern Michigan (lower penninsula)

Date: 9-3-18

Habitat: House surrounded by forest

Length: See below

Coloration: The one that I think is Ponera is black, while the other brownish.

Distinguishing Characteristics: See pics.

nuptial Flight: Not witnessed


Ponera pennsylvanicus.? Length 4mm-5mm - Hard to get her to stand still.

Then I found these two queens in my swimming pool today. They're about 4mm each. Dark brown in color. Any ideas?


Smaller Myrmica sp.? Length 4mm-4.5mm

First one is mostly likely Ponera pennsylvanica, I think that's the only species in the area. Second is indeed probably Myrmica of some sort - something looks a bit off about the eyes, but that might be just me. I'd need some more photos, from above, and from the side. There's a thread on taking good macro photos - it'd perhaps be easier to see her if you placed the tube on a tissue or a piece of white paper.
