Update 7-23-2017
 

I found a new queen in Wild Crossing, California on 7-10-2017. I found it wandering around on the ground at night, so I assume they flew a little earlier. I tried putting it in one of my dirt box setups, but it just sat there and didn't want to dig, so I put it in one of my small founding formicariums instead. It now has a big pile of eggs.

The workers slowly died off and then the queen too some time last week.

It's been a long time since I last updated this journal, but I finally found a P. hyatti queen that so far has been pretty successful. I've actually done pretty well with Pheidole this season, and the funny thing is, all three of my so-far-successful Pheidole species/colonies came from the one and only single queen I found of each this season.
 
I found this P. hyatti queen near Cactus City, CA on 8-22-2023 while I was out primarily looking for M. placodops queens.
 
The colony is already up to about 200 workers with 15 or so majors. They seem to be even more aggressive than my P. vistana colony when catching live fruit flies or other small insects.

I’m really wishing for a multi-queen colony of these some day like you’ve had in the past.

I love some of these journals but I think they're starting to have a bad effect on me....

 

Makes me want to get more ants :blush:  :lol:

 

To Self: Calm down, no more ants, 2 species is enough, just shut up and stop thinking about it, 2 ants, you promised yourself. Just stop considering it. No....not maybe, just no, STOP IT!
