This Formica subsericea colony kept foraging in my house, so instead of killing the colony, I caught 20 workers and the queen. Over the summer I will continually collect the entire colony.

Hehe. Funny story. While running away from a massive Neivimyrmex colony I accidentally disturbed, I stumbled upon a cute little Formica subsericea mound, quite literally. The queen was exposed and I took her and most of the colony (40-50 workers) and they are living in a glass test-tube. And just now, a clear liquid came out of her abdomen, and the worker's drank it!? Any ideas of what this is?

And now my hands and arms are covered in stings...

So colony #2 has about 75-100 workers now, and the queen laid around 15-20 new eggs! This queen, and colony #1's queen need names!

I just used my Formica trap to get a Formica dolosa colony in my neighborhood. They are beautiful ants! They are a bit smaller than F. subsericea, and are orange and yellow! I got the queen and a dozen or so workers, and am heading out to get more workers. Pics coming soon!

They have over 3000 workers and the queen just laid a ton of eggs. Their alates will be hatching soon. One naked pupa is super orange right now. Apparently they have 50 alate larvae and pupae total.

They got their second female alate tested and the queen laid a ton of new eggs.

Formica subsericea #2

They took some fruit flies, and the queen has laid over 400 eggs.

Abdolemons #1

They love crickets, and have around 40 workers and 100 eggs.

Formica pacifica #1

I told my friend to feed them 5 crickets and a dish of honey. They are swarming the crickets like usual, but aren't very interested in the honey. And the third female alate eclosed yesterday.

Formica subsericea #2

They got a cricket and some honey today.
