From reading Crystals pinned post on preferred diets by species, I thought C pennsylvanicus didn’t take to mealworms. I get 1 gallon containers of freeze-dried mealworms for our bird feeders (bluebirds, blue jays, orioles, cardinals, & sparrows eat them up). I soaked 3 mealworms in a few drops of warm water then fed them to my colonies. To my surprise, they loved them. These freeze-dried mealworms are an easy animal protein alternative to fruit flies or crickets and should be available at any full service bird food supplier or nature shop.
