Trying to get better at IDing and learning what's around my yard. Found these tonight looking for queens. Sorry for the poor pics have them in crappy tubes. I also can't really tell the difference between Camponotus and formica workers. Are they similar in size? Are Formica polymorphic? I see ones that look similar but gold or silver coloring variation. 

 

Camponotus major or super major?

1. Location (on a map) of collection: Boston, MA

2. Date of collection: 8-4-18
3. Habitat of collection: lawn/driveway
4. Length (from head to gaster): about 11-12mm
5. Color, hue, pattern and texture: black with goldish hairs on gaster

 

Camponotus worker?

1. Location (on a map) of collection: Boston, MA

3. Habitat of collection: lawn/driveway

4. Length (from head to gaster): about 8mm
5. Color, hue, pattern and texture: black with goldish hairs

 

I have no idea what this is this one was a first I've seen no sign of any others or a nest.

5. Color, hue, pattern and texture: redish with black gaster

1st two ants are Camponotus pennsylvanicus, the 3rd appears to be Camponotus herculeanus but I can't really tell at all from those images.

Thanks that's what I thought. The 3rd one is interesting I'll have to look for more of them.
