1. Found in my front yard. (Portland OR)

2. 4-5 days ago. 
3. length: 1-1.2cm
4. Colors/ features: Black, has 3 large black rings around it's gaster, 1 petiole node as far as I can tell.

 

WARNING! The following pictures should be viewed with discretion due to their atrociousness. (I couldn't seem to get any pictures better than this, tips/advice would be welcome. (I'm using a smartphone camera))

Formica sp, possibly Formica neogagates (size doesn't match though). 

 

Better pics would help to reveal exact species.

Could be Formica Fusca... I'm not an expert in ants in Oregon so it could be something else but definitely Formica sp.

Formica fusca isn't in North America.

Here is a journal article which breaks down the Formica fusca species variants found in North America and delineates why F. fusca is not found in America: [Link - p.515-526].

 

As for your species ID. It looks like a species in the the F. fusca species group.
