February 8, 2015 - Myrmecocystus Journal
I found these four honeypots yesterday near Palm Desert, CA. I wish there were a few more because of the low success rate, but I can't complain since they were sort of a unexpected bonus when digging for V. Pergandei. One already has a couple of eggs.

UPDATE
Two queens have eggs this morning. I also have two older queens found last year that finally have some eggs.

Are you gonna try some alternative test tube setups?

Nah, I don't care about honeypots that much. If they don't grow in the test tube then oh well...

There aren't really any super cool ants around here at all.

I have heard there isn't much to choose from in your area. At least you don't have any laws to import ants like we do here. We're pretty much stuck with what's in our state

Any update on how they've been doing? Myrmecocystus are high on my wanted list!
Camponotus vicinus, Crematogaster 1, Crematogaster 2, Formica francoeuri, *, *, Myrmecocystus testaceus, Novomessor cockerelli, Pheidole hyatti, Pogonomyrmex californicus, Pogonomyrmex rugosus, Solenopsis invicta

Wow I didn't realize it's been that long since I posted this. There are three left but they just keep eating the eggs. I was talking to Drew last night and it seems dirt setups might be the way to go with honeypots. I'm going to make something simple and see if they will still dig.

Only one survived and it got a new home yesterday so that's the end of this Journal. Only one survived and she still just had eggs. It appears she might have stopped eating them finally.
