FEBRUARY 8, 2015 - VEROMESSOR PERGANDEI JOURNAL
Today I collected 13 Veromessor Pergandei near Palm Desert, CA with dspdrew and kellakk. As soon as I stepped out of the truck at around 10am I noticed a very familiar looking founding chamber. Drew jumped right in and pulled out the first one which I think he very much deserved. Props to my boy for leading the horse to water once again. They are now in test tubes and ready to begin new colonies if all goes well.

That sucks, you mean there's no such thing as snow ants lol

I wish. They are so hard to find ... since their color is the same as snow... Besides, wind has been brutal lately and I ain't going out there.
It's Lasius heaven over there probably since their mating flight covered the whole area in September. I wasn't into anting at that time, so I didn't explore the forest. I sure am going to do that this year.

When it warms up start flipping rocks and you just might find some Lasius colonies

Literally from the cold? I would not know because I have not seen snow often enough!

Don't hate yet, we haven't had a chance to show you the honeypot queens we collected yesterday

I guess this means I should be actively looking for queens. I really want Veromessor and Solenopsis this season.

UPDATE
Seven queens have eggs this morning. One was found dead, leaving twelve left.

Thanks Jonathan, I'll work on some closeup pics in the next update.

Six of the seven survivors got a new home yesterday. They all had several nanitics and brood. I kept one for myself, which I will be moving into a dirt formicarium (Drews design) tomorrow.

The queen died and left behind a nice pile of brood and a dozen workers. The end.
