Hello! Recently I got interested in starting a colony, and today I caught what I believe is my first queen.

 

- Found in my yard in Ohio

-Collected  7/24/2018

- Found near my small goldfish pond in short grass. There was a few different ant hills and holes of different types of ant nearby.

- About 9 mm

-Very dark brown and black in coloring with lighter lines across her abdomen 

-Was running around really quick and panic-y, saw it looking for nesting spots like inspecting nooks in the dirt and under rocks. Ignored other ants.

Ah, 'course. Thought for sure I found a queen. I'll release her, and hopefully find an actual queen. Thanks for the help.

Try looking for a larger thorax and wing scars like this:
