It's best to read this post first, and post some information about the ant. A picture is not usually enough for an ID.
It is definitely a male of some sort.
Well size is one of the most important. Any idea how long it was in mm? The swimming pool part is good information also; that means it flew recently.
Ohhh, I think this is Veromessor pergandei then. Wow, this means they might have flown.
If this is indeed Veromessor pergandei, and they had a mating flight today, you should be able to find founding chambers near by. As cold as it is at night, it might take them a few days to finish digging their nests. I think they only open them up and dig at night, so that would be the easiest way to catch one. This is exactly how it went in Phelan, CA last year where I got mine.
Awesome. This might just be some pre-nuptial flight activity then. The one in the picture is a male. I haven't seen the others so I couldn't tell you for sure what those are.

What are some dead giveaways of male vs. female?
Camponotus vicinus, Crematogaster 1, Crematogaster 2, Formica francoeuri, *, *, Myrmecocystus testaceus, Novomessor cockerelli, Pheidole hyatti, Pogonomyrmex californicus, Pogonomyrmex rugosus, Solenopsis invicta
What are some dead giveaways of male vs. female?
A tiny head and a long gaster that comes to a sharp point. Another giveaway is they will be dead, or wandering around with no direction. Queens are focused and actively seeking a spot to dig their founding chambers.
