I scored this cool bug trap called the Nosquito, it has a UV light with a funnel trap underneath it. There is a fan that sucks the bugs down a trap door into a mesh cage. When the unit is turned off the trap door closes. I can't wait to see if it'll catch me some queens when it warms up.

Nice! Not sure about suction, fans and trap doors, but that is definitely the light you need to attract queens.

It's very much like your home made one. I can always disable the fan, the suction isn't very strong. Actually it doesn't seem to do much except make noise.

http://www.amazon.co...ywords=nosquito that's the link, and compared to other traps for sale i'd say that's a steal!

Yup that's it. Even at $23 it's a good buy in my opinion.

That's a good price, but keep in mind that bulb is only 4 watts, so that is a very low amount of light. To put it in perspective, the traps Bioquip sells are mostly either 12 or 22 watts.

I removed the little door at the bottom of the funnel easy. It just attaches into a little hole on each side. This unblocked the opening into the trap and made it a lot bigger

It is small, but surprisingly brighter than you would think. It's hard to stare directly into it for long. I would imagine in a dark spot it's a good starter kit for backyard black lighting. I don't really know how effective the funnel is but at least it can attract the queens and you could just catch them yourself.

I don't think you want to stare at the UV lights in those.

This seems like a cheap, easily workable UV light trap if it works.  Is the light replaceable? I'd rather have a higher wattage, although that may cost more than the device itself if the light bulb is in a strange size.

The bulb is about 6" long, I can measure it tomorrow if you want. I saw replacement bulbs on sale for around $7 but I couldn't tell you if the unit can handle higher wattage bulbs or if they exhist.

Should this be used outside? Just out in backyard.
