A while ago I got a pogonomyrmex rugosus queen with three workers. One worker died but then another one enclosed from its pupae and that's where I am now. They are housed in a small starter formicarium.

There is a important time for everything, important place for everyone, an important person for everybody, and an important ant for each and every ant keeper and myrmecologist alike
From my experience I have never had rugosus ever be sucessful unless they are able to dig.

Every colony I have ever had started off producing very slowly.
With your huge successful p rugosus colony that passed away... did you raise the queen in a test tube?Every colony I have ever had started off producing very slowly.

I actually did. You can read all about it in my journal here (https://www.formicul...pdated-8-4-2019). As you can see, the colony started out growing extremely slow, but then started blowing up in size after about 9 months. If you notice my update from March of the next year, it says they only had 8 workers, then about 6 months later, they had 80 workers.

EGGS have been spotted!! These guys didn't have any brood at all before so this is a good sign.

No brood and there is only one worker. Hopefully they can pull through.
