1. Location of collection:  Landcaster, California.
2. Date of collection: 4-1-2018.
3. Habitat of collection:  High desert.
4. Length (from head to gaster):  12mm
5. Color, hue, pattern and texture:  Red head and thorax. Black velvety-like gaster.
7. Distinguishing behavior:  Very fast, jerky movements.
 
ID Thread:
 
I found a few of these Myrmecocystus sp. queens 4-1-2018, in Landcaster, California. They were all dug from founding chambers.
 
I put them all in Dirt Box setups.

By now all but two of these queens have died. They both have a few workers.
 
These pictures are terrible, but they were the best I could get.

Any update? Also, any advice on keeping Myrmecocystus, I'm a first year ant keeper and I'm trying to do as much research and get as much advice as possible. Thanks.


Currently Keeping:

 

Pogonomyrmex Barbatus 4 queens each with eggs

Pogonomyrmex Rugosus 1 queen with eggs

Camponotus Festinatus 1 queen with eggs

Myrmecocystus Placodops or Mendax 1 queen with eggs

Atta Texana 8 queens with fungus

Not much to say, other than the two are still alive. I will be trying to ID them soon.
