Instead of buying really expensive red acrylic for my nests I was wondering if I could spray the outside of the glass with this http://www.krylon.co...-glass-paint/? I want to make sure that even with the paint only being on the outside of the glass covering the nest, the ants will be ok.  Maybe it's a dumb question but I can be dumb sometimes!

Red light filters work to reduce visible light transmission, making the nest darker.  Contrary to internet commentators, there is no evidence that ants are blind to red light.  As such, this is not something that is required to keep ants, but is more of a gimmick.  You can easily accomplish the same effect with a piece of cardboard or just by avoiding pointing bright lights directly at the nest.

 

Also, any type of spray paint will contain tons of solvents that will be extremely harmful to ants without a prolonged curing/off gassing process.  If your nose can detect the slightest odor, it's probably not safe.
