• Rural, sidewalk, near grassy areas/flowerbeds

4. Length:

• 7-8mm

5. Coloration, hue, pattern and texture:

• Antennae: tan
• Mandibles: brown
• Eyes: black
• Head: brown; square shape
• Thorax: dark brown with red
• Gaster: 4 dark brown bands (partial), yellow orange bottom/between bands
• Legs: tan

6. Distinguishing characteristics: 

• 1 Node
• 1 Spine

7. Anything else distinctive:

• Unknown

Well I would say you would need the habitat they commonly nest in and microscope pictures to ID Formica. Some people may be able to ID it that are familiar with Formica in your area with good enough pics.

I agree with formica.

Back with an update. Worker arrived. I am still stumped as to what species this is. 

 

My current guess is pallidefulva group.
