For anyone who doesn't already know, my real name is Drew or Andrew, and I'm from Southern California, Costa Mesa to be exact. I'm a network admin and webmaster of a few websites including this one now, and of course I love ants too. :D

Thanks. The organization and structure will remain mostly the same, but as for the look and the skin, this is just temporary, that will soon be changing to something a little cooler looking in my opinion.

Thanks. Funny, I just finished watching all your Youtube videos before jumping on here today. Those Bull Ants and your formicarium both are so awesome.

Hi. My name is Brian. I live in Spokane WA. I just stumbled across this forum while searching for information about “ant farms”. I had an uncle Milton’s ant farm when I was a kid and I loved it. I’m now in my early 50s and trying to find a hobby after recently becoming divorced a few years ago. I am not a dog or cat person. Wondering if it difficult to find queen ants in this area. Is anyone out there from the inland northwest?

Welcome, brother! This is a truly great hobby to pick up at any age. Queens are quite easy to find almost anywhere. Your best bet would be looking for spring flying Camponotus queens on the first truly warm evenings. Read this thread for general tips: https://www.formicul...tch-ant-queens/
"The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the summer." Prov. 30:25

I lived in the western WA so idk much about the wild life of the East but I'm pretty sure you have some cool desert speices out there. If you every go west you could get some cool Formica.

Hello, I'm also new here! Go by Stubyvast online, for privacy purposes. From Canada...haven't seen any one else from Canada on here so far, haha. Me and my friend (who is joining this forum right now) are both avid ant keepers for the past two years or so! Currently raising a lasius niger, a few myrmica rubra colonies, and hoping to catch more this summer! This forum is super helpful and gives tons of great advice!

My friend and I both post on coffeblock.ca (yes that's how it's spelled), with some info about general ant keeping too. Feel free to check it out if you'd like!

Lasius niger (single queen + ~90+ workers)

Lasius neoniger (3 single queen + brood)

Formica spp. (Queen [likely parasitic, needs brood])

Formica pacifica (Queen)

Tetramorium immigrans (1 queen + 1000+ workers)

When I was first getting into ant keeping and I was researching the heck out of every aspect of it, my searches kept bringing me to Formiculture threads. After my web browser had directed me to Formiculture about 100 times, I decided to join. This forum is AWESOME! I can find answers to every question I have related to ant keeping. Great job dspdrew and others for setting this up!

Dude you really have to stop reviving old posts for no reason. If you like a post just click the like button. A good rule of thumb is if the threads last post was a few months ago at a maximum and what you are saying contributes to the post (new information, experiment, etc) then it is fine. What's generally not okay is reviving threads such as this one from 2013 for no apparent reason. Remember, what you post on this forum can and will be read by lots of people for YEARS. Don't make unnecessary posts. You should probably chill out on the posts as well. You've been on this forum for 4 days and have over 40 posts already.

Hello, my apologies for this. I didn't know that doing this was a problem and I will stop such behaviour in the future. Thanks for your post, though. I will take this to mind when making future posts.
Also apologies for the number of posts I've made. I just have a lot of questions that I was hoping someone could help me with.

From what I've seen, TwistyPunch mostly did post questions, not useless posts; so, I disagree in that regard. Questions about ants are the backbone on which this forum is built.

I feel a lot for the questions asked could've been answered through research pretty easily. No need to post a new topic for a question with an easy to find answer. Yes this forum is for questions but it's your responsibly to at least attempt to find out the answer before asking others. He did post useless posts in very old topics a couple times such as the one pinned about hibernation from 2021 and this post. But agree to disagree.

I made sure to look up almost 100% of my questions online first in a few different wordings per question but a lot of the answers my web browser gave me were extremely unhelpful. I'm not trying to junk up this forum or anything, I just want to know how to effectively keep ants. I'm still pretty new to the hobby and I don't have much experience. Maybe I wasn't getting good answers because I was using a browser other than Chrome to look things up.

Perhaps you aren’t using good search terms? I like to put the words Reddit, or forum after my question as it tends to yield more results. I apologies if I sounded too blunt. All my friends say I always sound like kind of a jerk when I don’t mean to be. Asking questions is fine if you have to. Just refrain from reviving old posts and attempt to be as thorough as possible before asking. Always glad to have new forum members. Good luck in your ant keeping journey.
