I found this queen while looking for Camponotus subbarbatus in a twig last month. I gave her about 10 A. rudis workers yesterday. They have been getting along great so far. I hope she lays some eggs soon. (I won't be able to get pics for a while because of their tube)

Thanks! My only colony last year died in hibernation. Hopefully these do better for me this year! They are really common in my area too.

They are getting along great. I also think I see an egg! They love crickets, mealworms, apple slices and banana ZooMed Creatures food jelly cups. (Very long name, I know.)

I'm definitely going to follow your progress on this! Probably going to be harder for me to get but they apparently live here too. I saw a pic of them and now I have to have them! LOL They're a little beyond my level yet I think but hopefully I'll learn from your journal.

The eggs never developed, the host workers kept dying and the queen finally died. I will definitely try to get a new queen/colony soon.

Finally found a new queen! She is healthier looking than the last queen. I will give her some pupae from my Aphaenogaster cf. rudis colony.

Try looking in soft rotten wood. I found this one in an extremely old stump. This is how I found all of my queens.

I found a Tenneseensis colony today actually in an old tree that's being cut down. I have them here but they don't seem numerous. I may try to find the Queen of this colony before it gets destroyed.

I have no idea when EXACTLY they fly, but a few weeks ago, I witnessed a large flight from a dead tree. I suspect this queen is from that flight.

You are so lucky! I've never seen this species around. The only similar species I've seen around here are Aphaenogaster lamellidens, which I'd argue have prettier colors with their black legs, but the queens of A. tennesseensis are better looking, with their sculpture-less body and shiny orange coloration. As for body plan, A. tennesseensis takes the cake as their spines are HUGE! Unrelated, but have any of you taken a look at some of the tropical Aphaenogaster? There's one in particular that's one of my favorite ants in the world...

I got 2 aphaenogaster tennesseensis queens,one with like 25 eggs and some hosts and another withouth eggs(that one i caught myself) and she was accepted by the hosts
