Really not even sure this is a queen - kind of suspect not. The kids and I are just getting started in ant-keeping.
Body:
1. Wooded trail near creek. Rainstorm last evening, so we were out looking
2. June 2, 2018
3. Riparian - 20 yards from "creek" - it usually has some water, but more active after a rain.
4. 5 mm in length.
5. Red in coloration, gaster has black and white stripes toward the "stinger end".
6. Distinguishing characteristics (ie: one petiole node/two petiole nodes, length and orientation of any spines or bumps on the thorax or waist, head shape, eye size, shape of mandibles, number of antennal segments, etc.)
7. Really liked to burrow into the cotton ball in the test tube, but not really
8. single ant - sorry
Sorry for the lack of quality - no macro lens available.
