1. Location (on a map) of collection: Morristown, TN, USA

2. Date of collection: 05/05/2018

3. Habitat of collection: Local Park. She was under a piece of bark near a large area of cut down trees.

4. Length (from head to gaster): 15.9 Millimeters

5. Color, hue, pattern and texture: Black with reddish legs, either a hairy gaster or just striped pattern. Mostly smooth-looking.

6. Distinguishing characteristics: Large, Camponotus-like head. She also—as mentioned above—has red legs.

7. Distinguishing behavior: Quick and agile. Very shy.

8. Nest description: Found under a piece of bark that was leaning on a stump.

9. Nuptial flight time and date: 05/05/2018

• 1 Camponotus subbarbatus

• 1 Formica incerta

• 1 Formica subsericea

• 1 Crematogaster cf. ashmeadi

• 1 Crematogaster missouriensis

I think that's the rare red-legged strain of Camponotus pennsylvanicus

Didn’t even know that was a thing! Do the workers also carry the red colors?

I believe this to be a feature of the queen, and not generally of the workers. From what I've read though there isn't really anything indicating that they would. Let us know when the nanitics arrive and then you'll have a certainty!

Could also be Camponotus chromaiodes.
