This monogyne species is native to tropical rain forests in Bengal, Burma, Tenasserim and Borneo. They normally prefer soil nests or in rotten wood, often at the base of individual trees. As such, they require the nest to be a constant 60-80% relative humidity, and temperature between 21-26 C. This species does not hibernate, and lower temperatures will prevent them from foraging, and will also hinder brood development.
The foraging area should be even warmer, up to 30 C. The habitat may require regular misting, and the ants may use this environmental cue to expand their nest when the soil is more moist.
They will eat sweetened liquids and commonly accept small flies such as D. melanogaster, D. hydei, and mosquitos in captivity.
