This was actually my first time seeing these guys in action. I am no longer a Neivamyrmex virgin.

 

Took some samples, they are really small.

You should have collected more of them, it would be nice to have samples from that area in collections to document them. It is most likely the shiny head form of N. nigrescens. Would you be willing to part with one so I can id it for sure and put it in a collection?

regarding being a Neivamyrmex virgin, got my cherry popped in the early 1990s in Arizona...then first saw Eciton burcellii in the early 2000s in Costa Rica ;-)

have yet to see Dorylus though...

All yours! Heading there again this Tuesday or Wednesday for L. occidentale and will hopefully see more raids and grab more workers for you.

Grabbed a few more at the same spot last night. PM the address you want it sent to Gordon.

 

There is also a Pheidole prisoner in there as well, see image. Used OTC 90% CVS rubbing alcohol, so you may want to replace it with something more bullet proof for preservation.

These things are really hard to video. They won't stay still!

 

Very resistant to cold, too. These were frozen for a few hours, took them out to take pics of them, and they came back to life.

I do not see a resurrection coming any time soon for many reasons, not the least being that ant web does it so much better.

91% iso is actually ok, except after awhile it'll degrade the DNA....i use that now, but will probably switch to more expensive 95% ETOH, which you can buy as everclear in liquor stores.

I put in a huge number of miles and hours in that location, I looked at a map of the area today and was quite saddened to see how far the houses have moved up the hills.
