Brachymyrmex depilis have started flights here in manitoba. These are night fliers so a blacklight is highly recommended.

yes but there are no guarantees she’ll accept the brood, she could just eat them too but that’s okay.

Can I assume that Lasius fly earlier further north? I’m still dreaming of finding a non-parasitic Lasius someday, but I’m doubtful I ever will at this rate.

No just Lasius americanus flies end of July to early August. I feel like there are way more interesting species down there to dream about than Lasius lol.

Tomorrow I’m heading out to the beautiful rushing river provincial park near kenora. The park is known for its rufa group Formica and I’ll report my finds in the next few days.

Once again, I see your post, and immediately head out the door. Alas, none found here on the west side. You sure have me exercising a lot. LOL

I hope others had more luck.

I really don't know how you have so much trouble finding queens. You've gotta be doing something wrong.

Solenopsis molesta are starting to fly here as I found a dead alate in my pool. Myrmica have going at it for a few weeks now so I expect the bulk of the alates to fly in the next week or so.

Well it's not for lack of trying, that's for sure.  On most days (weather permitting) I take a good 45 minute walk, if not more.

I suspect that there are areas of the city more active than others (ie. large flights as opposed to smaller ones) based on geographical differences. I can't help but think that colony concentration must be much larger in areas that are closer to bodies of freshwater (i.e. the rivers that go through the city) as opposed to areas further from water like my neighborhood. Not only would the ants themselves benefit from a nearby water source, but also the flora and fauna in the area would be greater, thus providing a larger and more varied food supply for those ants.

I suspect I should hop in the car at times and check out areas nearer to the rivers but I haven't.

If I'm right and this is like last year, you'll have time to look, they seem to fly more then once around here.

I managed to catch me first and only crematogaster last year. But she got tangled in the cotton and died soon thereafter. :boohoo:
