Caught her at 7:50pm, around 19/18C at the time. It was very humid as it had rained the previous night.

Found another nearcticus alate in the exact same spot. I can't find a nest nearby but this might be bad news.

The fact that these two queens landed in the exact same spot a day appart seems odd to me. They might have both just been coming out of the nest in preparation to fly. There were plenty of spots the nest could have been hidden.

Tetramorium won't fly until July. Camponotus on the other hand, might finally fly.

Things work differently up here.... We haven't even gotten camponotus flights yet. Tetramorium fly in July.

Another camponotus flight here in Ottawa.

Caught a (you guessed it) C. Novae.

Actually saw another before that one but just as I was reaching down she stretched her wings and flew off.

I was not too dismayed as I figured the fact that she flew off probably meant she was still infertile. Never gave much thought to queens grounding and then going back up. Is this often the case?

I’m guessing tapinoma sessile is going to fly soon as people have been reporting lots of activity around the nests.
