I just thought I would let my fellow Chicago-land people here know that today I spotted (what I am fairly certain is) a Camponotus pennsylvanicus male alate while at work. I didn't see any queens, but I do intend on going out later now that I know they may be flying.

Nope, I was outside when I found him. I thought it was too cold as well but I was wrong I guess.

 

Its raining now so maybe (fingers crossed) they'll fly tomorrow. Probably not lol, but hey who knows.

I wish my parents let me keep carpenter ants...

I have a Camponotus pennsylvanicus colony in a tree in my front yard, and they're still in hibernation. I live in Chicago, and all the ants except for winter ants are hibernating. What part of the Chicagoland Area are you in? Are any ants out of hibernation there?

So I live in the Wheaton-Winfield area, and I too have seen very few ants out of hibernation. The ones that I've seen so far have mainly been Prenolepis and Lasius, however I also recently observed the Noveboracensis colony in my back yard becoming active again.

Was it alive or dead when you found it?  Will definitely keep an eye out!  Although, right now it's been snowing for 2 days now.. it needs to warm up so we can start anting already.
