My twin brother just found a Camponotus castaneus queen! He’s had a crappy year to say the least, but in some way it lead him to this moment, I guess. Either he’ll keep it, or most likely pass it on to me.

Went out to the Washington Sailing Marina and found eight more Crematogaster! I only kept five. It was on the exact same date that I found queens here last year. So cool!

I wish I could find Crematogaster, and you wish you could find Formica and Lasius. Oh well... the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

Keeping:

Big Lasius claviger flight here in NOVA. I found about eight queens plus some males on my patio. It was unseasonably warm at 65F today.

I went out tonight. I found one lasius queen without wings on the sidewalk. But no ants flying around the lights.

Perhaps this is a silly question, but is it not possible to parasitic Lasius without sacrificing one colony?
#77 Offline - Posted March 20 2020 - 9:18 AM
Let me clarify what my muddled mind tried to ask:
Is it not possible to keep parasitic lasius without sacrificing a colony to the hunting queen?

They don’t need to kill a queen, but they need to be provided with host workers from another colony. There is a detailed tutorial on here describing ways to do this.

An entire colony is not necessary. Callow workers (white, soft, newly hatched) from their hosts can be introduced to the queen, and they’ll most likely accept each other. You may also try introducing fully hardened workers and brood, yet be sure to stick them in the fridge for a few minutes first, as if you don’t, they could quite possibly attack each other.Perhaps this is a silly question, but is it not possible to parasitic Lasius without sacrificing one colony?

It's warm, but getting too windy for flights I think. I'll still search a bit this afternoon.
