You could’ve sold them. From what I can tell Formica queens are pretty hard to come by in VA.Reveal: Formica pallidefulva dealate!
CONGRATS!! How’d you find her? There was a Formica flight here in NC and I saw maybe 40-50 queens today!! Too bad I can’t bring them back home....
"God made..... all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds (including ants). And God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:25 NIV version
Keeping:
Formica cf. pallidefulva, cf. incerta, cf. argentea
Formica cf. aserva, cf. subintegra
Myrmica sp.
Lasius neoniger, brevicornis

Today, I set up a dead cricket as ant bait outside, and a yellow Pheidole sp. came! They soon covered the whole cricket and several majors appeared. Then a Tetramorium worker came, and ran away. I thought he wouldn't bother calling his colony because the cricket was claimed, but soon after that, four more workers appeared and decimated the Pheidole.

Crazy storms rolled through my area last night. I went out at 10:00 to Dora Kelly Nature Park hoping for Formica, but I came up empty as usual. I did come across a Monomorium mega-swarm in the parking lot, though, and added four queens to my three queen polygynous grouping. I also came across a larger Pheidole species that I need to ID as well as this monstrosity of a beetle:

We just had a storm roll through. I bet they’ll come to black-lights. I’m good for tiny ants, though, with my 7-queen Monomorium group.Found a molesta-group queen just now.
