I'm heading out into the woods today..

But if no one is flying ... what do I do? Lol

Flipping logs is just showing me other colonies.. not single queens

Tuesday might be promising. Humidity will be high.

Formica pallidefulva group queen. Nice find!

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

Formica pallidefulva group queen. Nice find!

Indeed, probably a queen ejected from a nearby nest. She likely won't survive, unfortunately.

So I tilled a section of my yard and there was a colony of these in one area that got tilled ... maybe she came from there

It's probably worth a shot seeing if they were from her colony. I would take a worker or two and chill them before introducing them, and if they cooperate maybe grab a few dozen more.

Apparently ants are like cats... they go to who ever does not like them.

My husband found this lovely girl hiding between the bags of mulch. She was alone.

Where are all the queens?

I’m asking myself the same thing. I think the Camponotus ship has sailed. Time to break out the blacklight for tiny queens.

Yup I do actually since I was making a nest for some bigger species that could be perfect for these and I have two rose bushes, tons of oak trees, fish flakes, and other things in my yard they like.

You need to find new queens this summer! I would pay top dollar for that.
