Did you collect her? What species?

I did! But I think she walked through the home defense poison stuff .. so she might not make it.

20210427_074218.jpg

No sure about species .. ill take a better pic when I get home.

To be fair .. in one of the most unfair things ever .. my husband who calls all ants pissants is the one who found her.

He said.. and I quote ... *I found a tank!*

I upturned a rock looking for isopods and saw a handful of Camponotus castaneus alates right at the surface. I'm hoping they'll fly tonight or tomorrow morning, as they're on my list for this year.

Normally C. castaneus fly a bit later in the year, from May through June.

C. pennsylvanicus most likely. Not sure what else it could be.

I was thinking that, and I've been anticipating it. I suppose I'll just keep an eye out and not hold my breath

Not to be a downer, but they’re pretty boring ants to keep. You’d be better off with other Camponotus species or other genera entirely.

They usually just peter out and die, don’t swarm food, grow extremely slowly, etc. Just not my cup of tea.

Ah, do Americanus, Subb, and Nearcticus fly that late too?

There must have been something wrong with your colony, then. I've never seen that before. How were they kept? Normally they have a pretty good feeding response.

I had them in a big naturalistic terrarium. They were living under a rock in their native soil and loved it. The colony got up to 80 workers, but I never saw them do anything. It wasn’t worth the amount of space they took up. When Tapinoma started taking over their tank, I had to release them. Now I just collect the queens to sell on GAN. They are my cash cow.

ANTdrew isn't the only person who has kept them on the forum with that experience. I thought I have seen at least 2 others with similar experiences.
