They’re about half the size of a Tetramorium queen. Did you find any on your light?

Ok, thanks I was just wondering...I think bicarinata is absent. I should be able to get tysoni  or pilfera, but I haven't seen any on my blacklight.

Guess what I found, boys!

I got a bunch of Pheidole tysoni queens today. They were all under rocks and some were in old cobwebs. I even found a few Colobopsis queens (dead, unfortunately) in spiderwebs. Going out later tonight to catch a ton more, as the flight last night was evidently huge. There were hundreds of dead queens around my house!

Nice!

She was roaming in the grass by the Theodore Roosevelt Island parking lot. It was overcast and very humid when I found her at 11:15.

I was hoping for more Formica after the heavy rains we had, but I came across a big swarming flight of Monomorium instead. Pairs were mating on a huge clump of trumpet creeper, so I gathered three queens I saw mating. I put all three in a polygynous grouping just for the heck of it.

Found another Pheidole pilfera worker in the same place I saw the last one! There is probably a colony there.

I took my kids for a nature walk at Huntley Meadows this morning. Along the boardwalk through the swamp, I came across this Crematogaster colony starting to swarm out of their nest with many winged queens. Of course my kids started being annoying, so I couldn't hang around to see if they'd fly or look for dealates, so I'm super bummed about that. I'm intrigued to see such an early flight, or maybe it is a different species? Ashmeadi?
