I think this is L. Umbratus or L. Claviger, but I want to be sure.

Location: Northeastern lower penninsula of Michigan

Habitat: Scrambling around the ground, near the base of a Maple tree looking for a place to hide (or infiltrate)

Date caught: 4-12-18

Temperature: mid to high 60's.

Length: 6mm-8mm - kids lost my tape measure, so can't get exact at the moment.

Color: Dark brown, possibly black.

Other information: Gave her L. Niger (or Neoniger) brood and she carries them around the test tube. She'll put them down and begin to groom herself, or possibly attempting to absorb their scent. She'll repeat the process a few times in a row before taking a break.

In the mean time, I'll work on getting some better pics.

I think that is too large to be Lasius claviger, correct me if I'm wrong though. I'm going with Formica.

Edit: nahhh, it's Lasius.... sorry, I've given nothing to this...

No worries. I made a few changes to my original post anyways. I put L. clavigar when I meant L. Umbratus, and I'm trying to nail down a definite size. My kids were measuring strips of yarn for a school project and now I can't find my measuring tape.

We need better pictures; these are blurry with poor definition. From what I can make out, this seems to resemble L. umbratus more so than L. claviger.
