Is it a wild or cultivated variety?
I know there are 2-3 types like that in the aquarium trade, often grown emersed in amphibian or vivarium setups.

That is what I originally thought, and still hope, as I brought some home.
I don't think any Sphagnum moss grows around here. This looks like the same short carpet-like moss that I see in the local mountains a lot. I'm growing some of it myself, but I've never tried to figure out what type of moss it is.
Haircap moss possibly?
