I want to make a naturalistic formicarium made of plaster for my Crematogaster sp. since they are exploding in numbers, but I don't know if painting the interior of the nest is safe I heard that it is basically a pladtic solvent and that hydration is more of a concern(thankfully I have that planned out!) but I just wanted to make sure if acrylic paint would be safe or not. Thanks in advance!

Proverbs 6:6-8 New International Version (NIV)

Go to the ant, you sluggard;
    consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander,
    no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
    and gathers its food at harvest.

Scientists use either an acrylic or enamel paint to paint the ants themselves for experiments, so it shouldn't bother them. Here is a link showing scientists painting ants with either an acrylic or enamel paint.
