In this thread I will share videos of my Camponotus nicobarensis colony with you.

 

The first one is a time-lapse of the colony drinking sugar water. You can easily see how the worker's gaster expands (that is called physogastry). The video runs 25x faster than real time.

I made an interesting observation yesterday. They started building a nest inside a cooked potato (maybe I should patent this idea and build nests made out of potatoes).

Awesome timelapse! It was a bit gross when they pulled out a chunk of gut. It was interesting to see what they would do to the inner parts of an insect. I was wondering if they would eat it there or take it to the nest. Turns out it was both!

These ants prefer dismantling insects at the place they found them. If you are so grossed out by a little bit of gut you shouldn't browse my other videos ;)

Haha not a lot of things gross me out. I think gross was the wrong word, maybe gruesome or morbid would've been a better choice.

Today I gave my ants a German specialty: Zwiebelmettwurst. The sausage is made out of raw pork mixed with salt, pepper and small pieces of onions.

 

The time-lapse runs at 125 times of the real-time speed.

During late spring i find lots of different species of ants making satelite nests in fallen apples. They`re easy to dig in, its humid and food is right there, sort of reminds me of the idea of those antworks nests.
