[Guardian]

I live in the Midlothian area and wanting to get into the ant keeping hobby. They are amazing animals and would make a wonderful pet to care for. All new to this so I welcome any advice or suggestions on how to get started! Hope to meet some fellow Texans here.

Welcome Guardian,  I'm a newbie also looking for my first formicarium!  I live in South Dallas...almost Duncanville.

Looking forward to the Queen Season that is about to start!

Hello Todd! What kind of formicarium are you looking at purchasing or making? I am thinking of making one. Saw some of Crystals work and figured I’d try something she has. TarHeel ants look pretty nice though!

Are there any particular an species your looking for in particular or just anything at this point? Will keep an eye out for any queens if your near by Midlothian 😎 I am practically looking for anything at this point. Would like to get ahold of some Solenopsis queens if I can.

I would like to catch a queen and start out like that, but don't know if I have the patients to wait, so also looking to buy maybe a test-tube starter colony from a GAN Farmer.  Closest GAN farmer right now has some...a three hour drive from Dallas!

I've heard several inconsistencies with GAN farmers from Texas, not to mention there are scammers, exotic dealers, and overpriced ants. If anything, don't go looking for colonies on GAN. Find your own queens, as much as we Texan's like to complain about Solenopsis invicta we really do have great diversity not seen in northern states. Take advantage of your location, it may seem like you only see RIFA, but I find many queens of species I have not or rarely seen before. Its a great experience, you should try it.
