Anting trips for 2018. Reports of rain in desired trails. parks and desert. with ant diversity.
We have rain for the whole LA county. if any knows of right temperature for flights please post here.
If you all think this topic is not necessary please let me know.

It's a bit too cold for flights. We've had showers here and there but haven't seen any queens because it's too cold. It's probably going to be the same this time too.

It's been raining hard here. Forecast for rain all week.

 

Just needs to warm up after, but so far doesn't look like that's going to happen.

great post. guys. I agree. at night temps go to low 40 to high 30 in Vasquez rock and Simi valley. not sure for the deserts no ant will fly with that cold temp. from what Nurbs told me. it needs to be 65 minimun at night for then to fly. till next shower guys.

ok. rains all over LA county. Simi valley. Vasquez rocks. palmdale temp is at 50 in the morning. I believe if it warms up on the weekend. something might fly.

I pass by Vasquez rock. 2 days after the rain when it got a bit hot. Not a single foundng chamber on sight. this month was bad for ants. Any one found something in s. california.

there has been rain all over Simi valley Vasquez rock. and Palmdale. temperature in simi and Vasquez rock is at 64 degrees barely enough for something to fly

ok went to check. Simi valley. there were some funding chambers. as well as nanitics coming out from January flights. I have a video. of a tiny colony. barely planning their chamber. I did not wanted to take one of the nanitics since they can mean success or fail of a colony. if you can tell which species it is please write it here

It will be too late tomorrow. Go check today if you live close. Supposed to rain tomorrow which will wash away all the chambers.

 

It's still cold though - 72 high and 51 low today at Vasquez. But possible something may have flown.

Two of those I would say are definitely founding chambers. The one with the two ants in the picture does not look like it would be created by either of those species. Also, if those were nanitics, that would have had to have been dug about two months ago. After all that rain we got, it would not look like that. I would say it's a new founding chamber. You really should dig it up and see what's inside. I can't imagine what could have flown in these temperatures, but in that location, at this time of the year it could be a number of honeypot species, or possibly Veromessor pergandei. I've never been there, but I would imagine those species could be found there.

unfortunately I did not bring tools. I forgot them. I went back from work to Simi v. north side. I found a better spot. I have some pics. I will dig them tomorrow. what would be the best time? afternoon. when dirt on top is warm?. I hope to get there before it rains. here are some pics.

First two are chambers! You went looking for chambers but forgot to bring your shovel? What kind of ant enthusiast are you!

I don't know if any of those four are founding chambers. The first two look to me like mature nests, recently repaired after the rain.

 

This I'm almost positive is a founding chamber though. You can tell by the overall diameter, the gap around the hole, and the dirt clump size.

I know right. It's on my way to work. so I stop and went to the trails to take a look. in 15 minutes of searching I found all of these ants and chambers. these trails take hours to cross. I'm sure there were hundred of chambers all over. it's raining hard now. they will all disappear. I wonder what I could have found if I went depper into the trail with time and tools. this is the first time I found many chamber succesfully. in a 100 meter walk. last time I went i was prepared to the teeth only to find a few chambers all empty. the irony.

I work in thousand oaks. it was raining in the morning as well as Simi valley. where I found all those chambers they are gone now thx to the rain. Vasquez rock. not too sure. check Nurbs previous post. he showed me a website which has history of rains. from a month ago. check if it rain in Vasquez rock since the weekend. I know it rain on Sunday. if something flew, and there was no rain on Monday or today. you will find the chambers. if it rain today or monday. it too late.
