Yeah, true. Who knows what TSA does with beautiful, shimmering camponotus queens, with their deadly mandibles and ferocious...
You get the point. Thanks for all the input, I'll probably stay away from anting while I'm there.

remember [the USDA] response says MOVEMENT.

The response you posted states "...movement...across state lines..." is prohibited. The questioner here is talking about a plane flight from one part of his state to another part of the same state. This would be like carrying them in a passenger vehicle. It is 100% allowed.

As far as TSA goes, they shouldn't interfere as long as there's not more than the allowed volume of liquid in a test tube. In fact, if they're in plastic collection vials with no water, they shouldn't even question anything. They're not customs officers. They're only looking for dangerous things.

In California at least it is not legal to transport ants across county lines. Transport by air would qualify.

Everyone from California please raise your hand if you've caught or bought ants in a different county than that in which you live, and then transported them home. Looks like everyone raised their hand.

California may have some crazy regulations, but I'd be surprised if this was one of them. Perhaps someone can do the research and find the actual statute or regulation, if it exists?

I'd have to see the actual statute before I believed that California was that controlling of their insects.

Just cause people get away with it doesn't mean it's legal.  :P

You can't get away with breaking a law that doesn't exist. I'll wait for someone to cite the law or regulation before believing this one.

I'll just pretend it doesn't exist until the FDA comes knocking at my door...
If I do go out and look, and get lucky and catch some I'll at least try to bring them with me lol

It's illegal to collect any insect in California so we're already breaking the law haha.

Just my two cents. There is an ant black market and TSA agents have busted people for importing foreign queen ants. Transporting queens even within state, may look concerning to said same TSA agents. How are they to know other than by your word that they aren't say Mexican Ants? With that being said, I raise fish, and I was pleasantly surprised to learn you can bring fish as carry on in bags of water. They are exempt from the, what is it, 2 oz fluid rule.

You're absolutely confusing TSA with Customs & Border Protection.  CBP only monitors international flights, not domestic.

I don't fly much anymore and never flown out of the country so yeah your right, although I think they all work together more or less. I still wouldn't risk it. Cept for fish. :D
