1. Location (on a map) of collection: Grey's Court SC
2. Date of collection: 2/23/18
3. Habitat of collection: I was on a roof but the area was surrounded by trees and various habitats. The building I was on is a Transmission factory.
4. Length (from head to gaster): 6.5-7mm
5. Color, hue, pattern and texture: Dk brn/reddish. Gaster is darker than the rest of the body. Body is smooth.
6. Distinguishing characteristics: Seem to have a pretty heavy presence of hairs on the entire body, but you cannot see them at all without magnification. I think I see 1 node on the petiole but I can't get her to sit still long enough to be certain.
7. Distinguishing behavior: Pretty actively moving around in the test tube...
8. Nest description:

9. Nuptial flight time and date: Early to mid-afternoon. I found the first one at about 2pm and the other two over the next 3 hours.

This is my first time attempting to take pictures of ants and post them so any tips on how to do so more effectively are appreciated. I've also never used photobucket before, so I apologize if I've gone about it wrong.

Try imgur, then right click your uploaded picture and "open image in new tab" and copy the URL. Embed the URL in here.

As dark as these are, I am leaning towards these being Solenopsis richteri.

From what I've read, solenopsis are a fairly difficult species to keep. Is this due to the aggressiveness or some other reason? I'm in the process of finding my first colony so forgive my ignorance.

Looking at antwiki, the pics they have for this species definitely look like my three ladies.

I agree, these are Solenopsis richteri, I've seen a good deal of those before. I would not recommend these as a first colony because they grow super fast, and they are super aggressive.

Isn't it a bit early for Solenopsis to fly?

Nuptial flights started happening early January this year in California. It seems to be happening very early everywhere this year.

It'll be interesting to see if other species do likewise. They may well know something we've yet to find out.
