Probably either Formica neorufibarbis or Formica incerta.
1. Location of collection: Circle Pines Center, Delton, Michigan
2. Date of collection: Unknown
3. Habitat of collection: In an oak/pine forest, on a small beach. Note: this is not where I caught her but is exactly the same type of habitat.
4. Length: 10mm (Note: her abdomen was slightly swollen when this measurement was taken.
5. Coloration, hue, pattern, and texture: Head and gaster are black, alitrunk has red and black patterns. Smooth and shiny, no hairs visible to the naked eye.
6. Distinguishing characteristics: One petiolar node. Wings are a smoky silver-gray.
7. Anything else distinctive: Paranoid like most Formica queens, but calms down faster.
8. Nest description: None
9. Nuptial flight time and date: Queen was found around mid-morning.
