I recently got this colony from Nurbs and I have just taken them out of hibernation. They have already started taking food, like mealworms and honey. They are at 7 workers, (1 died during hibernation) and 3 larvae. Right now they are housed in a “nurbs” setup.

I’ll try to get some better pictures if I can.

I'm always jealous of people with Camponotus ants... hoping to catch a bunch this season!

Embedded :)

EDIT: If you go hiking in the woods and find fallen dead pine, take a few small pieces. They love that.

We were already in Los Angeles as we were visiting Universal Studios. There is no way my parents would drive me that far just for ants lol.

Thanks, how do you embed the photos?

If you have an IMGUR account, there are two ways. First option is way more reliable than second.

Preferred option is to click on the image you uploaded and then choose the size you want. I like "large thumbnail", but it all depends on the resolution of your shot. Then click COPY for the BBCODE MESSAGE BOARD + FORUMS.

Imgur automagically creates an embed link for you that works with this forum. See image below.

The other less reliable way - sometimes works, sometimes doesn't - is to simply right click on the image and goto "copy image address". I use Chrome, but depending on the browser you use the address link will sometimes not embed.

Well there is some good new and some bad news with this colony. First off the queen actually laid 3 eggs!:) The bad news is that the larvae are nowhere to be found. Either they have hidden them or they had eaten them. I will try to get pics ASAP.

Most likely eaten. They were probably dead or duds. Don't expect brood that goes into hibernation to come out unscathed, it's normal. That fact she is laying eggs again is already a good sign.

Don't mean to hijack this journal but will my C. Modoc queen with just one worker be able to rear a colony, or is she done for? She had six, but they died of formic acid poison :(, now just one left.

She'll probably be good. You just gotta make sure to feed them and give them as good a life as possible. You should probably only disturb them when feeding.

Hard to say, you can try brood boosting her. C. modoc are common up north. Look for a colony and grab a few pupae.

Would they accept different closely related species brood, like laevigatus or vicinus?

The queen laid even more eggs. Now there are around 5-7 eggs. It’s hard to get a picture as my camera isn’t the greatest, but I will still try.
