Is there any reason why Pogonomyrmex subnitidus isn't native to the Bay Area? There are multiple records of  P. subnitidus within 50 miles both north and south of the Bay Area.

It's possible that some of those are misidentifications, especially further north of here. There are definitely P. californicus south and further inland from the Bay Area though (on top of the P. subdentatus).

I have personally found P. californicus in huge abundance in Merced, CA. didn't see any subdentatus there.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

First 70F+ degree days of the year. Could be as early as late Jan or as late as March, varies from year to year.

iNaturalist has Prenolepis sightings all over the world, if you zoom down to the East Bay you can see several sightings in your area:

Probably nothing for the next few weeks. Starting mid May the usual summer suspects will fly: Formica, Veromessor andrei, and more.

Perhaps the last Liomepotum flights and some wandering Camponotus queens, but yes, nothing for a while.

The Pheidole and Veromessor should fly in a few weeks time, during the first really hot days (ideally mid 90 degrees F) of summer.

Underneath the swarms of argies you can find some species if you look hard enough, as I have 9 different species living on my urban property and I'm in the middle of the Willow Glen area.
