I use this with good success. Throw a white sheet over it, and add some supports so the sheet is elevated and the light spreads out. I have caught numerous queens this way.

24in?

How often do you check on it? Do you leave it on all the time?
I plug it in on hot nights, 70+ after dark. And yes, 24 inch.

Would a backyard or a frontward work better.

(how large is your sheet by the way?)

I use my backyard, don't know how it would differ. Mine is a full bed sized bedsheet.

One last question, when do you check on it? (or how often)

Found what I believe to be a Camponotus clarithorax queen at 1pm today.

Around every 10-15 minutes.

Hello Bay Area Anter's,

I am new to the hobby and will have my first test tubes this coming week. I live in the east bay and was wondering anyone was willing to share some good anting locations? Time of day, days coming up, and type of weather would also be appreciated. I am hoping to get a few different species if possible.

Thank you!

The first post on this topic has spots if I'm not mistaken? If it doesn't, what part of the East Bay are you from? Mt. Diablo and the surrounding foothills are some of the best places to find cool genera like Solenopsis, Pheidole, Veromessor, and Pogonomyrmex.

This weekend, Veromessor will fly in some areas (for now seems like East Bay, and maybe some other areas). At night, there will surely be nocturnal species like Solenopsis, Temnothorax, Pheidole, and maybe Liometopum flying. Look on streetlamps or blacklight for those.

There's a heatwave coming in from Louisiana I believe. Weekend is definitely a good time.

Does anyone know when Camponotus ants are flying this summer in the bay area and the places/tips on finding them. I'm in San Jose and haven't had much luck in any of the parks and space preserves around

Ok. You are a little late on a few species but they will be flying till September. On where to find them dead trees near wood, you should go to mount tam and look.

Camponotus here flies on the first 80+ degree day. Afraid to say you missed it. Still, Veromessor andrei which are harvester ants will be flying this weekend. Check out Santa Teresa Park at sundown, you might find some.
