Dorymyrmex would be fine. I can give you a #4 (4mm tunnel space) if you want. That would be the proper one for ants that size. We just don't have any other sizes listed yet.
I hate to derail the conversation, but i just bought two of them as well and was wondering if Monomorium emarginatum (which is the same size as M. minimum) would be suited to living in them. Would they be too small?
..Why are buying things before doing research?
"I'm the search bar! Type questions into me and I'll search within the forums for an answer!"
Well he can still use them, but I'd have looked or asked to see if they actually work for what I would use them for lol.
Are these dirt shacks, actually Drew's design or from someone else? I assume Drew made these, but maybe not. Curious if they would be good for large ants like Novomessor cockerelli or a bit smaller, Pogonomyrmex rugosus?
Oh, I see, so its actually from DrTMiller and I guess Drew designs them. Says medium sized ants, so that probably cut out Novomessor and Pogonomyrmex rugosus which are both pretty large lol.
Drew designed and manufactures the product currently listed on Amazon, and he alone benefits from the sale of that product. I'm just helping him sell them by adding them to my store. That's why the manufacturer is not listed as "byFormica Ant Products."
Because Drew sent me one #7 to photograph and test out, I can answer some questions about them. For smaller ants like Dorymyrmex, the "#4" Drew referenced indicates a model not yet listed for sale, in which there is 4 mm of space between the clear plastic and inner hydration chamber in which the ants may dig. In contrast, the "#7" listed on Amazon has 7 mm of space, making it more suitable for medium-sized ants.
While smaller ants may be compatible with the larger "#7" sold on Amazon, the ants are likely to dig in a manner that obstructs viewing of the constructed tunnels and chambers, especially early on when the colony is small. Therefore, if the user wishes to observe the ants in their tunnels and chambers, it is necessary to obtain a model with no greater than the required amount of space for the ants to construct those tunnels and chambers. For small or large ants, please wait for other sizes to become available for sale on Amazon before purchasing.
Do you know when we might be able to expect the smaller versions on Amazon or anywhere else online?
Current Colonies:
Camponotus Noveboracensis: 4 Colonies
Camponotus Pennsylvanicus: 2 Colonies
Formica Subsericea: 1 Colony
Prenolepis Imparis: 1 Colony
Looking to Buy:
Any Pheidole Colonies
Camponotus Castaneus
Camponutus Subbarbatus
The #7's would be suitable for almost any ants 5mm or larger. The only reason you would need a #10 would be for Myrmecocystus mexicanus, large Camponotus species, or any other very large ants.
Any ants smaller than 3mm might be a problem. I might eventually design one suitable for very tiny ants like Monomorium, small Pheidole, and Temnothorax.

I was thinking about getting one of these for my Tetramorium immigrans colony. What size nest would be best for them (workers are 2.5 to 4 mm, queens are about 8 mm)? And on Amazon, there is only the size seven. How do I get different sizes if 7mm isn't right for Tetramorium?

A #4 might be better for that. Five more sizes and another color should be available on Amazon soon. In the mean time, you could buy one directly from me if you want.

Thanks. How do I do that? Do I just message you (sorry, I'm new to buying/selling formicaria)?
