I’m sort of new to the ant keeping hobby and I don’t have a huge majority of ants where I live only ever see Argentine ants. I’m fascinated by how ants work togethe like a super organism and thrive because of it and I really want to start this hobby and maybe make it a life long thing.

I don't think you will find anything for free unless you get really lucky and someone is giving away one.

You are likely going to have to go out of the city or to parks to find anything other than Argentines. You can always buy one for a relatively good price from someone like dspdrew or nurbs.

I was lucky enough to get my first 4 queens for free. I think I would do massive research about ants and their requirements before trying to get them. If I had more knowledge at the time, I think I may still have one of them alive. If you can wait till feb/march... that's when a bunch species start to fly in Cali, then you may be able to just catch them yourself. Make sure you have all the supplies you need before you go down this road.

Sorry bud, but finding ants in CA isn't easy, if you are referring to the good species anyway. Not many people are just gonna "give them away."

If I get any extra queen ants this season, I’ll give em to you for free, maybe pre-eggs, if you drive to me.

Just looked at a map of Ventura. Bet there's tons of awesome species where you live, especially in the canyon foothills just North of you. You won't find any in your urbanized backyard or neighborhood. You simply have to go out and look, but not far. If you're underage ask your parents to take you to the local trails.

And yes, also what TC said. Finding the more interesting ants in CA isn't easy. Just this week I've driven out to the local canyons foothills four times at night looking for one particular species and only found one. Killed about $60 in gas so far, not to mention time.

I would greatly appreciate it but I depends on if I find any or not.
