Is there anything wrong with using fibre board as a plaster mold?

Specifically MDF, I could get single sided melamine which I've heard is more water resistant.

Going to make an adjustable mold out of a few sheets but don't want to invest much if the wood will deteriorate.

The moisture would eventually cause the wood to get messed up. I would just use a untreated 2 by 4 pine board. (You could use other sizes as well) It might grow a little mold or change colors, but it can get wet. Just dry it out when your done with it.

It will expand a lot when in contact with moisture.

Thought it might.

How does melamine hold up though?

Why not just coat it with oil first, like olive or canola? Let it soak in real good first. Can also use petroleum jelly i presume.
