I am wondering if anyone has any good designs or experience of displaying formicaria in their living rooms? You often see really interesting displays in museums, zoos and aquariums and I wondered if anyone has done any with their ants?

I was thinking of designing a wall mounted acrylic nest and connecting it to two wall mounted outworlds via transparent tubing, so I could watch the ants running around my living room.

Another idea I am thinking about is if there is a way to make a glass coffee table with the nests and outworlds inside, so that you can watch the ants while having your coffee.

Just wondering if anyone else has had similar ideas or success in designing things? :)

You could always make a naturalistic setup and include lots of cool plants. Not only will it be visually pleasing it would also make a great home for your ants:)

It can be done. Found this online. I like the idea. I might try a smaller version.

I've thought about that, just don't have the room right now. Maybe a little later on. No doubt an end table with ants in it would be cool. Just don't put Camponotous sp. in it if it's wood. :P

Craigslist ad:
"End Table  - Yours free with pickup

Made an end table for my ants to live in. They died awhile ago and I kinda forgot about it. Now its a big mess."

@Diesel that's great :) I could definitely make one of those, but it would have to wait until the children are old enough not to stand on it!

i'd make an insert made of acrylic or glass that could slide inside a wooden box underneath so they couldn't chew through it. if i were to go this route it would definitely be camponotus. they are large and easily viewable.i'd have to design something that would allow me to hydrate and remove for proper cleaning. i'm definitely brainstorming. might be a fun project for a natural type setup with plants and stuff.

I was thinking of doing this with termites since they don't need an out world depending on the species you use....

Termites + wall is not something many people like to hear.
