I’ve recently started hibernating my small Lasius niger colony in their testtube but have noticed when checking on them that the cotton which is holding back the water in the tube looks like it’s getting mouldy, I don’t really want to disturb them during hibernation but I feel like it may definitely be needed, any advice would be appreciated

How bad is the mold? What colour is the Mold? if it's just a tiny bit and they have somewhere to escape to [even if it's the other side of the test tube] then I wouldn't worry about it. I would make sure you keep a close eye on it though because mold can get out of hand pretty fast.

It’s not too bad at the minute, it’s black and is spread throughout the cotton wool but sparsely, it’s black and more concentrated on the cotton that’s exposed to the air where the ants are and yeah they have a lot of room to get away from it and I’ll check on it every few days or once a week, thanks

just put some salt on it it will slow it down and maybe stop it
