Simple question :P

 

Do you give your queen ants a name, and i fo what are they called?

 

Our Messor barbarus queen is called Pixie (my wife and daughter named her :P )


1x Messor barbarus - 50+ 
1x Lasius niger - 10+
1x Lasius flavus - 4+
3x Lasius flavus - 2+
1x Camponotus ligniperdus - 1+
1x Formica Fusca - 0+
1x Myrmica? - 0+

This is my first attempt at keeping a colony. I got three queens that haven't laid eggs yet. Caught them mid September and was told they might not lay till after hibernation. If they do lay I plan on naming the fertile queen(s) and the colony/colonies. I don't plan on keeping more than one or two colonies, so not a big deal.

It's Common to name the Colony as a whole, as you see in Ants Canada's YouTube videos. But Yes I have one Queen Pogonomyrmex rugosus I have named Khaleesi, I had others that where Game of Thrones based names but they all died

Stopped naming them, too many to consider at this point.

I will sometimes name colonies and on rare occasions name queens. My messor barbarus queen was named Queen Elizabeth on account of her being origonally from the uk. both of my Formica subsericia were name Antuonette 1 and Antuonette 2 resoectively. My Tapinom seesile colony was called "dark matter", due to how they would congregate to form a back void and my second largest colony of Tetramorium is now reffered to as "The Order of The Dark Knights". It would be way to difficult to name all of my colonies / queens though.

I don't name my queens but I name my formicarium

Currently they are in the fallout shelter and their out world is Land of the Goofballs (inside joke from our science class)

I call my Tetramorium colony  my little dudes.

Ants have terrible hearing though.

My ants "come" when they are breathed on, not to me though. And by come I mean they run around frantically. the point is they take notice!
